Females with disproportionately large breasts may experience neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, etc due to it. Breast reduction in such cases would provide both physical and psychological benefits from the surgery.
Additionally, breast reduction may be needed following mastectomy, to make the breasts more symmetric and in cases of gynecomastia.
PROCEDURE
Under general anaesthesia, an incision encircling the areola (darkened area around the nipple) and extending downward and around the underside of the breast is given. Excess tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the nipple and areola are repositioned.
DURATION
The operation may take two to four hours. Hospital stay of 3-4 days may be required.
RECOVERY
Elastic bandage or supportive inner garments may have to be used for several weeks. Stitches are removed after 1-2 weeks. Daily routine can be resumed with caution within a week and strenuous activities after 6 weeks.
RISKS
Include bleeding, infection, decreased sensation around nipple, asymmetry, impaired ability to breast feed, etc. Breast reduction will cause scars along the incisions as a normal side effect, which will fade with time. The risk is minimized if the procedure is carried out by qualified and experienced Cosmetic surgeon.
